Walking in and around Ōkārito
The Ōkārito village is nestled between the Tasman Sea and its rugged coastal shoreline and the lush rainforest of Westland Tai Poutini National Park. This provides many opportunities for a variety of walks, from short hikes to longer day trips through the bush and along the coast. Walking around the village and in the bush you will meet the resident putangitangi/paradise shelducks, kererū/NZ pigeon, pīwakawaka/fantail, miromiro/tomtit, tūī, korimako/bellbird, and Ruru/morepork to name a few. While on the beach you will see, Tōrea/Oystercatcher, Tūturiwhatu/NZ dotterel, kuaka/godwits, and tara/white fronted tern. Meeting up with other humans is more of a rarity – with only approximately 30 residents all year round you can often go for a walk and be the only one on the beach.
