Activities in and around Ōkārito

Ōkārito is a hidden gem that many travellers miss. It is now a quiet village of approximately 30 locals. The peaceful setting adjacent to a wild coastline with mountain views and lush rainforest is a pretty incredible environment for a community. Human impact dates back approximately 600 years. In recent history, Ōkārito was a thriving town in the Gold Rush era of the 1860s, a flax milling area in the early 1900s, a source of timber for forestry up until the 1980s and now it is at the centre of the largest predator-free conservation project in the country. Ōkārito provides a landscape of exploration for all and there are a few family run businesses to help you experience this environment in a memorable and enjoyable way.

These cabins are superb. They are cleverly designed and appointed with everything you need. The native plantings provide privacy without obstructing the view. The shared kitchen-dining area allows for convivial interaction with others. And with sea, lagoon, mountains, bush and beach all on your doorstep, I can't think of a more perfect NZ location.
